Hemp seed oil, made from the Cannabis Sativa plant. An amazing topical oil used for pain treatment, skin ailments and beauty preparations ! To tackle a commonly asked question at the start: Hemp seed oil has no psychoactive properties. An oil that may contain these properties would be “cannabis oil”. (this would then have some THC contained there within). Okie doke. Hemp seed oil is of high nutritive value both topically and also taken internally. It and can be very beneficial to those who are suffering inflammation and pain issues. As a Clinical Aromatherapist, I will be talking a little today about how it can be used topically. However, as a holistic practitioner I will also give you a little bit of information on how it may also be consumed to help these issues as well. |
Hemp oil is known for its high amounts of Omega 6 (50-60%) and Omega 3 (15-20%) fatty acids. Our skin health depends on these Omegas to maintain is suppleness and youthful glow. We get these fatty acids purely through our diet (either eaten or taken in through our skin). We are able to obtain them topically or through consumption. Hemp oil on our salad for example, or use in our Aromatherapy products, as I will discuss.
IN CLINICAL AROMATHERAPY: Hemp Seed Oil
People with psoriasis, acne, eczema, dandruff, and severe dry skin can benefit from the use of hemp oil topically on the skin. Either through use of the oil directly or incorporation of the oil into a location, salve, ointment or balm.
Because of it's antioxidant properties and nutritional content, hemp seed oil helps improve skin moister, prevents tissues damage, and premature tissue aging, and offers some protection against UV rays. (This oil can also be taken internally for improved skin texture and smoothness as well. )
Inflammation: Hemp oil can relieve both topically inflammation and joint and muscles inflammation. It is a wonderful addition to any massage oil. I use it in conjunction with other oils which will keep the texture of the massage blend thicker. This green oil is on the dry side. Thus, by using a thicker oil such as sunflower oil the texture can be a bit more moisturizing and last longer for the therapist to work their magic.
Acne: Hemp oil will not clog the pours which makes it perfect for facial oil preparations. It is a quick absorbing oil and will help to reduce inflammation of existing blemish issues. It can help in healing old scars and also help prevent in formation of new acne. Essential oils added with hemp oil and some Jojoba oil being also non- comedogenic (non-pore clogging), would make a smooth and silky facial preparation.
Eczema: When taken internally (ingested) hemp oil has shown to help with “ dryness and itching” and improve over all symptoms of Eczema. Because of it's high content of essential fatty acids when used topically it soothe and restore the skin. Again essential oils can be added which are soothing to the emotions (shown to be linked to Eczema) and also anti-inflammatory and healing. For Eczema I like to add infused oils like Willow bark or Calendula oil.
Psoriasis: Hemp Oil contains Vit D and high amounts of Essential Fatty Acids (as mentioned before) which makes it optimum for Psoriasis and severe dry skin in general. For severe cases a body butter containing Hemp oil or a thick lotion would be recommended.

Where can you get Hemp seed oil?
Firstly, remember that when purchasing anything you want to make sure that what you are buying is from an organic or wild-crafted source. Chemicals are not something you want your body to absorb. You will bring those chemicals in through your pours (if you haven't figured that out yet). So, ORGANIC all the way when possible.
I have found it in the refrigerated section at my local Whole Foods and Sprouts stores. Also you can order it from this site:
