Much more than just aroma....
Marcel Gattefosse, considered the father of modern Aromatherapy and the man who coined the term “aromatherapie”, was the first to study “the therapeutic application or use of aromatic substances (essential oils) “as medicine.
As aromatherapy developed as a form of plant therapy, it became more known for its abilities to be a holistic approach; encompassing the body, mind and spirit in the way of treating its subjects.
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils (plant essences) to support and enhance the body's own natural healing abilities during acute and chronic stages of disease. It can be used to reduce the likelihood of occurrence and/or prevent the onset of chronic degenerative disease when integrated into a whole health lifestyle. The use of aromatherapy for preventative measures often involves the reduction of stress as well as strengthening the immune system and uplifting a client's perception of their life, including stresses they may deal with on a day-to-day basis.
The vehicles for aromatherapy widely vary as you can see on my products page. The chemistry of Essential oils can affect our brain via way of the skin into the blood system by use of oils, lotions, balms and other topical products. The fastest and most effective way that the therapeutic plant chemicals can be effective is through our sense of smell. By way of our nose, we have an olfactory bulb which picks up the aroma/plant chemicals and carries their actions directly to our brain. Because the molecules are so tiny, they can affect us instantaneously. These are the two most well know vehicles for essential oils.
Essential oils are wondrous in that each oil has many different therapeutic actions and qualities. Some, because of their chemical make-up, have certain actions which are stronger than others. However, this explains why a Clinical Aromatherapist can work with you to find an aroma profile* that best suits your likes and lean toward those oils. There are many oils that will have similar actions and the blend can be tailored both to your enjoyment and also to its medicinal action. After all, part of the therapy being effective for mind and body, is that it is soothing in it's aroma. If it is a smell that grates on your nerves it is not filling one of those obligations.

A bit of history:
The history of aromatics takes us back as far as the origins of humankind, when he/she put material onto a fire or ate particular plants. Humans’ sense of smell needed to be very keen in those days and found that the smoke, scents, and aromas affected them in different ways. Some plant materials made humans feel restful, and others stimulated. Some would go to the chest, making breathing easier.
The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans are well known for their use of aromatic plants and aromatic extracts. The Egyptians used balsams, perfumed oils and scented barks and resins for medicine, food preservation and religious ceremonies and also for embalming the dead.
Aromatics were also used during the middle ages for defense against the bubonic plague. Aromatics were burned in the streets and in homes to ward off infection. It is often suspected that the perfumers and glove makers were mostly immune to the plague because they were constantly surrounded by aromatic essential oils.
In many ways, the history of Aromatherapy is the history of herbal medicine, which enjoys a long and abundant history throughout the world. Plants, specifically aromatic plants, have been employed for thousands of years and are still considered to be an important source of medicine. They are highly concentrated volatile plant oils. Parts of the plant have been steam distilled; The leaves, rind, seeds, bark, and flowers......all parts containing different elements of the plants chemicals which have therapeutic actions.
The power of Essential oils or plant essences will amaze you the more you get to know what they are capable of. As I have taken the time to experience them myself, and see their action in person, I learn something new every single day about what is possible through plants.
